Tennis Court Lighting Design

Proper tennis court lighting standards range from recreational to professional levels. An even distribution of light provides a well-lit playing area for both spectators and players.

Lighting Brightness

The most important requirement of proper tennis court lighting is brightness. Adequate brightness ensures a well-lite court that will provide a good range of vision for players and spectators. HID (High Intensity Discharge) floodlights and lamps can illuminate the whole space. They are often inexpensive, but might require extra lighting be installed to properly light the space.

LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps are often a preferred option, as they can provide various brightness levels in comparison to the HID counterparts. The maximum power of LED lights ranges around 10,000 Watts while HID typically stays in the 1,500-2,000 Watt range (which is why they require additional lighting for most venues).

Lighting Efficiency

Since the lights will be on for much of the day, the weighing cost of your energy bills is a required estimate for your space. LED lights are efficient in this manner and are widely known for their energy efficiency. For determining the efficiency of light sources we use “luminous efficacy.” This unit is lm/W, where “lm” stands for lumen. The higher the lumen, the higher the brightness of your light source.

LED lights have 120-150 lm/W, metal halide has 75-100 lm/W, HPS has 90-100, and halogen has 10-20. LED lights, obviously, will save more on electricity than any other lighting solution and are better for constant illumination.

Lighting Life Span

The life span of your lighting is one of the most important requirements. Because of your courts staying open until late night, your lights must retain a long life. Short life spans lead to frequently replacing lights which can be a creeping cost in maintenance, replacement and operation. The installation costs of field lighting is often high.

LED lights have a lengthy service life, often lasting for up to 100,000 hours. Halogen lights last for only 2,000 hours, while metal halide can last up to 10,000. LEDs insurmountably provide the best performance for your exterior lighting.
